Do not send flowers. This is your first gay valentine and neither of you may be totally committed to a long-term relationship. Save the flowers for birthdays, funerals and when you are in the dog house. Same goes with those stuffed animals.
Give a non traditional gift. You do not have to give your first gay valentine cards, chocolates and flowers. You could give them a gift related to their hobby or a practical gift like a tie. Think of something that you know will be special to them.
Know who pays. So your first gay valentine asked you out for dinner at a fancy restaurant. You offer to pay for your share of the meal and he refuses to let you.
